This Tree of 40 Fruit illustration was initially done as a mock magazine cover (later featured as a cover on Edible, Silicon Valley magazine). The concept came from an article I read about a series of hybridized fruit trees by contemporary artist Sam Van Aken. Each of his trees bears over 40 varieties of fruit. Through the grafting process, he has sculpted trees that produce incredible floral blossoms in the spring, and produce a variety of fruit that ripens throughout the summer.  Tree of 40 fruit ~~ © Patricia Pinsk Since one of these trees is in New York, I liked the idea of incorporating the cityscape behind the trees. The trunk and roots are anthropomorphized to look like female forms (represent life-giving forms) wrapped in gauze-like material (represent the grafting process).
