It's summertime! The word prompt for this piece was "cloud". I initially thought that creating a figure holding a balloon shaped as a cloud would be interesting, but someone in the FB 52 Week Challenge group already created a composition of this nature.
Then I remembered one of my favourite paintings, La Corde Sensible, by the Belgian Surrealist René Magritte. It's the painting that has a cloud hovering over a wine glass.
I took one of my cloud photos and digitally reshaped the image to look more like an ice cream scoop. I drew the cone part, and digitally added texture, shadows and colour. |
The cloud hues and saturation levels were also digitally adjusted to give it a bit more contrast from the background.
I wanted to create an illustration that was more poster-like rather than painterly. So I then added a plain sky-blue background.
The only reference to Magritte's landscape painting, La Corde Sensible, is the weed-like plants at the base of the ice cream cone.
The final ice cream cone illustration was created with ink, felt brush pens, digital photography and textures. Refer to Artsy’s René Magritte page for further information on this artist. Or, you can check out my Surreal art and illustration Pinterest board:
